Enhance your travel program with retrofitted A320 and A380 fleets

Lufthansa is executing one of its most comprehensive fleet modernization programs, retrofitting both short-haul Airbus A320s and long-haul A380s to deliver consistently elevated comfort across all route types.

A380 Business Class Retrofit

All eight Airbus A380-800 aircraft will receive new premium Business Class seats from the manufacturer Thompson. Each of the 68 seats features direct aisle access, a seat width of 58 cm, a bed length of at least two meters, Bluetooth connectivity, and flexible partitions for privacy. The first retrofitted A380 returns to service at Munich in April 2026, with all eight aircraft completed by mid-2027. Retrofit work is performed at Elbe Flugzeugwerke in Dresden, leveraging existing certification to accelerate the process.

A320 Cabin Modernization

38 Airbus A320s are being retrofitted with new seats from the manufacturer Geven featuring horizontally adjustable headrests and enhanced ergonomics. Overhead bins are 40% larger, allowing vertical baggage stowage and faster boarding. Every seat gains USB-A and USB-C ports plus tablet/smartphone holders. Comfort is further enhanced by the headrests that adjust horizontally and the backrest that reclines further in Business Class. The first retrofitted A320 (D-AIZY) returned to service in mid-February 2026. All 38 aircraft will be completed by 2029, with each retrofit taking approximately 30 days and involving around 1,000 components from 100 suppliers.

For travelers, this investment means your programs consistently deliver modern, comfortable cabin experiences whether travelers are flying two hours to London or ten hours to New York.

First retrofitted A380 now in service – first stop: Los Angeles

On April 23, 2026, the first chapter of the A380 retrofit program became reality: "Mike-Charly" (D-AIMC) departed Munich as flight LH452 at 12:15 p.m. local time, landing in Los Angeles at approximately 3:15 p.m. – marking the debut of Lufthansa's new A380 Business Class in scheduled service.

After roughly 12 weeks at Elbe Flugzeugwerke in Dresden, the aircraft returned with a fully transformed upper deck. The new Thompson Business Class seats offer 58 cm seat width, a bed length of at least two meters, flexible partitions for privacy, and direct aisle access from every one of the 68 seats – making it the most comfortable Business Class the A380 has ever seen.

The in-flight entertainment system has been upgraded across all cabin classes as well: Business Class guests now enjoy an 18-inch Panasonic screen, Bluetooth connectivity for personal headphones, an interactive 3D moving map, cinema-quality sound, flight cameras, and a new intuitive user interface.

The very same day "Mike-Charly" returned to service, work began on the next aircraft: "Mike-Hotel" – recognizable by its blue anniversary livery featuring the XXL crane – is already in Dresden. The remaining seven A380s are scheduled to be completed by mid-2027.
