The Lufthansa Group focuses on a modern, efficient and well-structured fleet and continues to invest in its fundamental renewal. This will enable the Airline Group to continue to offer leading product quality and at the same time fly even more economically and quietly.

Currently, the most important driver for reducing CO₂ emissions from flight operations is investing continuously in modern, particularly fuel-efficient aircraft and engine technologies. At the same time, efficient concepts for take-off and landing are being implemented and the digitization of approach technologies advances.

A350 Air to Air Rendering

Lufthansa Group pushes ahead with fleet modernization and purchases ten state-of-the-art long-haul aircraft (five Airbus A350-900s and five Boeing 787-9 aircraft).  These aircraft contribute strongly to enhancing sustainability by reducing fuel consumption and carbon emissions by 30 percent. With the Airbus A350-900, the Boeing 777-9 and the Boeing 787-9, the Lufthansa Group will operate the most fuel-efficient long-haul aircraft in terms of kerosene consumption per passenger and 100 kilometers flown. On average, the new aircraft fleet will only consume approximately 2.5 liters of kerosene per passenger and 100 kilometers flown. This is about 30 percent less than many current as well as previously operated long-haul aircraft models and will have an equally positive impact on the Group’s carbon footprint.

A320neo - Less noise. Less fuel. Less CO2.

The advanced engine technology of the Pratt & Whitney engine (geared turbofan) and the aerodynamic wing tips (sharklets) of the A320neo result in a significant reduction in fuel consumption of up to 20 per cent. The aircraft are also fitted with noise-reducing vortex generators as standard. The take-off noise footprint of the A320neo is approximately 50 per cent lower compared to equivalent aircraft types.

A220 - The innovative ones

The A220's key environmental performance indicators are similarly positive, with perceived noise reduced by half compared to the previous generation. CO₂ emissions are 20 percent lower.
Thanks to the latest technologies, the A220 sets new standards in comfort, economy and environmental compatibility.

Boeing 787-9 - Dreamliner

The first Boeing 787-9 are scheduled to fly for Lufthansa as early as next winter, with others to follow in the first half of 2022. This decision brings the total number of firm orders for Boeing 787-9s and Boeing 777-9s to 45 aircraft. The airplane's unparalleled fuel efficiency and range flexibility enables us to optimize fleet and network performance. An experience like none other in the air, with more comfort and less fatigue. 

Airbus A350-900 - One of the most modern and environmentally friendly long haul aircraft worldwide


On average the new aircraft will consume a mere 2.9 liters of kerosene per passenger per 100 kilometers, roughly 25 percent less than current-generation aircraft. The state-of-the-art Rolls Royce Trent XWB engines and an aerodynamic design will also reduce noise emissions to well below current prescribed limits. The five newly ordered Airbus A350-900 will be delivered in 2027 and 2028. This brings the total number of firm orders for the A350-900 to 45 aircraft.

Boeing 777-9

The Boeing 777-9 is powered by state-of-the-art GE9X turbofans, which, with a fan diameter of 340 centimeters, are the largest jet engines in the world. Combined with a newly designed carbon fiber wing, the 777-9 is expected to outshine all competitors with lower fuel consumption figures. But performance is just part of the story. With a spacious, wide cabin, new custom architecture and innovations from the 787 Dreamliner, the 777-9 will deliver the flight experience of the future.
