Fuel Consumption & Sustainable Aviation Fuel

For decades, the Lufthansa Group has been working on improving fuel efficiency in flight operations and succeeded in reducing specific fuel consumption by about 30% in comparison to the mid-1990s. By using new aircraft technologies and advanced procedures, flying becomes more and more efficient.

Sustainable Aviation Fuel can reduce CO2 emissions up to 80 percent

Besides improving fuel efficiency, the usage of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) is essential for the energy transition in aviation and for reaching our ambitious targets in CO₂ reduction. Compared to fossil fuels, current SAF is based on waste materials such as used cooking oil.

The Lufthansa Group has been intensively involved in researching, testing and using SAF and in 2011 pioneered the world's first long-term testing of bio kerosene in regular flight operations. Lufthansa demonstrated at that time that sustainable alternative fuel can be used in flight operations without any problems and that no infrastructure adaptation is necessary.

To date already more than 2,000 t of instant CO2 savings have been realized

Currently, Sustainable Aviation Fuels are only available in extremely small quantities on the global market. However, we are constantly striving for making SAF more available with various projects. In addition, every traveler can contribute to increase the use of alternative fuels and fly nearly CO₂-neutral by replacing conventional kerosene 1:1 with SAF, regardless of the choice of airline.
To make this easily accessible, the Lufthansa Innovation Hub has developed the platform “Compensaid” which calculates the price difference between fossil kerosene and SAF. The purchased alternative kerosene will be deployed from Frankfurt in Lufthansa's flight operations within six months.
