THE BEST CITIES FOR A WORKATION

“The world’s my oyster, let’s go!” That’s what you might think if you’re contemplating the idea of a workation for the first time. The reality, however, is somewhat different. What use is the most beautiful beach if there’s no reliable internet for miles around? When do I actually have to start paying social security abroad? And why is the group of party-mad 18-year-olds making such a racket at night?

To make sure all that doesn’t happen, we asked around and put together a list of destinations that are not only good for vacationing but also good for working. We looked at local living costs, quality of broadband connection, availability of coworking spaces, sun, and the general attractiveness of the city.

PS: This list is, of course, by no means definitive and perhaps also somewhat subjective, but it’s intended to give you a little bit of inspiration and insight. There are many other great cities that are also suitable for a workation: Berlin, Ljubljana, Dublin, and Vancouver, to name but a few.

Top five cities for a workation

1. Lisbon

The city on the Atlantic is full of coworking spaces in all price ranges and catering for every need. The internet is reliable and fast; espressos, apartments, and taxis are cheap. There’s a lot to enjoy in the culinary sphere and, on the weekends, you can head out to the coast. Europeans, in particular, should feel at home here. Those who speak Portuguese have a clear advantage, but you can get by with English everywhere.

2. Buenos Aires

Fast internet, affordable living costs compared with most other big cities, tango and delicious food on every corner, and the sun shines almost every day. The ability to speak Spanish is an advantage, but you can get by in English. A definite recommendation.

3. Dubrovnik

An insider tip, because this picturesque city on the Adriatic coast is likely not on most people’s radar as a workation destination. You’ll be impressed by its superb September and October weather, good internet, and international airport. And there’s no shortage of vacation opportunities either, with delicious seafood in one of the numerous pubs, lots of excursion possibilities, moderate living costs, and hospitable locals. The national language is Croatian, but English is understood everywhere.

Frankly, Bangkok could have been number one. Thailand’s capital has always been an Eldorado for digital nomads and now also for fans of the workation. Here you’ll find everything you need for concentrated work, plus lots of opportunities to meet people from all over the world, great hospitality, and amazingly affordable living costs. What more could the dedicated workationer want?
