A320 retrofit: More comfort on Lufthansa short- and medium-haul flights

(3 March 2026)

Lufthansa will soon offer passengers more comfort and a modernized cabin not only on long-haul routes, but also on short and medium-haul flights. A total of 38 Airbus A320 aircraft will be retrofitted by 2029 and will receive new seats, significantly larger overhead bins, USB ports at every seat, as well as a tablet and smartphone holder.

More comfort with new seats

The new ergonomically shaped seats offer noticeably greater comfort than the previous ones. Horizontally adjustable headrests provide additional support. In Business Class, the backrest can be reclined further.

Significantly more storage space for carry-on baggage

The new overhead bins are 40 percent larger and offer space for significantly more carry-on suitcases or bags. The reason: baggage can now be stowed vertically. This also makes boarding more efficient, as passengers can stow their luggage more quickly.

Practical features for mobile devices

All seats are equipped with USB-A and USB-C ports as well as a holder for tablets and smartphones – ideal for passengers who want to watch movies and series on their own device.

Around 1,000 components from roughly 100 suppliers will be installed as part of the retrofit. On average, retrofitting a single A320 takes around 30 days.
