New seat categories on continental flights: First Row Seat and Back Seat

Effective 22 July 2026, the airlines of the Lufthansa Group will introduce two new seat categories on short- and medium-haul flights: the First Row Seat in Business Class and the Back Seat in Economy Class, giving travelers even more choice when selecting their preferred seat.

The introduction further harmonizes the Lufthansa Group's continental seat portfolio and adds two seating options already offered by ITA Airways.

The new chargeable seat categories will be available on continental flights operated by Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Lufthansa, SWISS, Air Dolomiti, and Lufthansa City Airlines.

First Row Seat (Business Class)

The First Row Seat is located in the first row of the Business Class cabin, offering the exclusivity of the front row and the convenience of quicker boarding and deboarding.

HON Circle Members and Senators can continue to reserve the First Row Seat free of charge.

Back Seat (Economy Class)

The new Back Seat category includes the last four or more rows of the Economy Class cabin, depending on the aircraft type.

The Back Seat offers travelers the most affordable way to select their seat before departure, at a lower price point than the Classic Seat.

Travelers with an Economy Flex fare, as well as HON Circle Members and Senators, can continue to reserve the Back Seat at no charge (except when traveling on Economy Basic and Economy Light fares).
