Excess baggage, special baggage and sports baggage

For excess and special baggage, flat rates apply. This is also the case for sports baggage that exceeds the free baggage allowance.

Excess baggage

In Economy and Premium Economy Class, a piece of baggage is considered to be excess baggage when it weighs more than 23 kg (up to a maximum of 32 kg) and/or is larger than 158 cm (the sum of width X + height Y + depth Z up to a maximum of 292 cm).

In Business and First Class a piece of baggage is considered to be excess baggage when its total dimensions are greater than 158 cm up to a maximum of 292 cm.

Booking and prices

You will be charged the flat rates1 for excess baggage if your checked baggage corresponds to the allowed number of items but exceeds the permitted weight and/or dimensions, or if the number of checked pieces of baggage exceeds the allowance.

On certain routes, as an Economy Class passenger you can benefit from discounted flat rates for the second piece of checked baggage (up to 23 kg/up to 158 cm).

If you are travelling with another airline, please contact the operating airline directly for information about their excess baggage charges.

You can check your free baggage allowance in just a few steps with our baggage calculator, based on route, travel class and fare. There you’ll also find the prices and permitted maximum weight and dimensions for excess baggage.

Excess baggage heavier than 32 kg

Items of baggage which weigh more than 32 kg will not be accepted as travel baggage. They can be sent by air freight. Please note that the maximum permitted weight per item of baggage can vary on flights with other airlines. Information about this can be obtained from the airline in question.

Sports baggage and special baggage

Whether for snowboarding, surfing or golf, you’ll find all the information about registering your sports baggage and special baggage and the various transport options here.

Registration of sports equipment

Flat rates apply to sports baggage that exceeds the free baggage allowances. You can pay the applicable flat rates at the airport.

Please note that the transport of sports equipment is subject to available cargo hold capacity. Carriage cannot be guaranteed in all cases and depends on the respective load situation of the flight.

Also please ensure that your sports baggage and special baggage (SSR SPEQ bzw. SSR BULK) is registered as early as possible, and in any case no later than 72 hours before departure. To guarantee the carriage of your sports equipment, transport must be confirmed in the booking.

You will find further information on booking or registering sports baggage and special baggage in the eXperts member area.
