EMAS awards for the Lufthansa Group

Lufthansa, SWISS and Lufthansa CityLine have received an EMAS award this year.

The Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) is a system for environmental management and environmental auditing developed by the European Union. It offers companies a voluntary framework for continuously improving their own environmental performance. The requirements of EMAS go beyond the international standard ISO 14001 and demand additional transparency and continuous improvement. EMAS is considered the world's most demanding environmental management system, as the efforts for more sustainability in companies are examined in detail by external experts.

Lufthansa and Lufthansa CityLine have again been successfully certified according to EMAS and the international standard ISO 14001 in Frankfurt and Munich. The certifications confirm the continuous further development and consistent implementation of their environmental management system. Important measures such as the "Reduced Engine Taxi-In" procedure contribute to saving up to 2,750 tons of kerosene per year. In addition, the measure of pre-ordering in-flight catering has reduced waste on board. Lufthansa intends to work with partners such as the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and Airbus to advance the development and market launch of power-to-liquid fuels (PtL).

SWISS was also validated in accordance with EMAS for the first time for the 2023 operating year and also received ISO 14001 certification. The decisive factor here was the systematic recording and monitoring of environmental data at SWISS, as well as the anchoring of the sustainability concept in the entire company organization.

As a result, SWISS will now publish an annual environmental report containing detailed information on the company's environmental management system and environmental impact.

These awards underline Lufthansa Group Airlines' commitment to its ambitious climate goals. The Lufthansa Group is aiming for a CO2 -neutral balance sheet by 2050 and to halve net CO2 emissions by 2030 compared to 2019.

Austrian Airlines was also successfully validated again for 2023. The Italian airline Air Dolomiti, which belongs to Lufthansa, has also been EMAS validated.
